In a recent feature for Pharmaceutical Market Europe, Director for Pathway Transformation at IQVIA, Ingrid Martin asks how healthcare practitioners can help achieve better patient outcomes through collaboration.
As a thought leader in the sector, Martin sets out her thoughts on whether the voice of the patient is being included within care pathways in the UK.
Patient groups often complain that they are not at the centre of their treatment pathway and Martin argues that by embracing new technologies, patients can be empowered to take more of a steer over their care.
Martin told Pharmaceutical Market Europe that โThe UK is a pioneer in bringing digital technologies into healthcare to support patient care, and a recent IQVIA report identified England as the most mature of the top five European countries in terms of digital health system maturity.โ
Highlighting the benefits of analysing patient journeys, the IQVIA Pathway Transformation team has demonstrated successes and areas of potential improvement to patient experience across all aspects of LEAN:
- Motion
- Over-processing
- Inventory
- Transportation
- Rework
- Over-production
- Waiting times; and
- Staffing
โListening to patientsโ experiences, insights and expertise is key to creating patient-centric pathways,โ said Martin.
It is not just patients that can help shape pathways, IQVIA suggest it is important to ensure families and carers are also taken into consideration. This provision of often emotional support will have a significant impact on the delivery of patient care.
