My Priorities as Labour’s MP in Cities of London and Westminster

Headshot 3

Rachel Blake

Labour’s candidate to be the MP for Cities of London and Westminster.

Rachel Blake sets out her aims as she seeks to be the first Labour MP to win in Cities of London and Westminster.

We will almost certainly have a general election this year – I am standing to be Labour’s first MP for Cities of London and Westminster. Stretching from Liverpool Street to the Royal Albert Hall, and home to residents of St John’s Wood, Pimlico, Paddington, Fitzrovia, Mayfair, Soho, Marylebone, Knightsbridge, Belgravia, and many more neighbourhoods – this constituency is the heart of London.

I’ve spent my entire working life focussed on tackling the challenges we face here locally – from realising London’s economic potential to securing more affordable homes and standing up for the most vulnerable families. The next General Election is an opportunity for residents to elect an MP who is passionate about securing a brighter, fairer future for Londoners and has the policy-making experience to secure the changes we need.

Westminster

My Priorities for the Cities of London and Westminster:

Fixing our broken health system. I will fight for St Mary’s Hospital to receive the investment it so desperately needs. The local NHS trust has said the delays to rebuild the hospitals will be “hugely damaging for the health and healthcare of hundreds of thousands of people”. I will fight for rebuilding and repairs to begin immediately.

Safer streets. Under a Tory government, the crime rate in Cities of London and Westminster has spiralled and is higher than the overall London average. I will fight to increase the number of police on the streets, restore community policing, and support local Safer Neighbourhood Teams.

Tackling the housing crisis. I will support the delivery of more genuinely affordable homes. I will support a licensing system for short-term lets and leasehold reform. I will make eradicating dirty money in the heart of our city a key priority to protect our economy. I will fight for change on a national level to give councils the power to seize properties bought with corrupt funds and force illegal companies to declare ownership. I will fight for powers to seize and impose taxes on empty homes and advocate for services to help those who are homeless.

Support a strong and growing economy. After 13 years of Tory rule nationally, people are feeling the effects of dramatic price increases. Labour is offering stability, investment, and economic security. I believe we must restore our reputation as a reliable international partner, building our strong relationship with European leaders. I am campaigning against dirty money and waste. The Conservatives in Westminster wasted £6 million on a Mound that completely failed to attract tourism and revenue.

Breaking down the barriers to opportunity. I support a modern childcare system; Labour is promising free breakfast clubs. We have outstanding local schools and I want to break down barriers at every stage so that no one is held back.

Our campaign is speaking to residents every week who want to see a change, and who want to get Britain’s future back.
