“It Is Awesome Being a Woman in Politics”: Lib Dem Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper MP Urges Women to Stand and #AccelerateAction

Daisy Cooper MP speaking at our International Women’s Day Reception

On International Women’s Day 2025, Chamber UK and 50:50 Parliament brought together trailblazing women and political allies including Daisy Cooper MP for an inspiring evening in the Speaker’s State Apartments at the House of Commons. The event, celebrating the 2025 International Women’s Day theme #AccelerateAction, aimed to spotlight progress while energising further efforts to secure gender equality in political representation.

Among the standout contributions was a rousing speech by Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Daisy Cooper who shared honest reflections, a healthy dose of humour, and an unequivocal message: “It is awesome being a woman in politics.”

A Powerful Alliance for Change

This year’s reception marked a moment of unity and purpose across the political spectrum, highlighting how collaboration – not competition – can drive real progress. 50:50 Parliament’s ongoing work to increase gender parity in elected roles was at the heart of the evening, with Chamber UK supporting efforts to amplify the voices of women ready to lead.

“We are breaking the glass ceiling. Come and join us.”

Daisy Cooper was candid in her reflections on the Liberal Democrats’ journey. She acknowledged a slight decrease in female representation in the current Parliament – down to 44% of the party’s MPs – but also highlighted a significant win: 32 women now serve as Liberal Democrat MPs, a marked increase as the party has grown.

Cooper told guests, “As we’ve grown, we’ve elected a lot more women to come with us – and we are just a smidgen away from 50:50.”

Her message was one of pride and continued ambition, encouraging all parties to stay committed to building diverse teams that truly reflect the electorate.

Spotlight on Representation and Visibility

One of the most impactful moments in Cooper’s remarks came as she described a powerful image from the Commons just a week earlier – a photograph of many of the 263 sitting female MPs, symbolising not just progress in numbers, but the shattering of historic barriers.

She said, “Amongst our number, we had the Deputy Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, myself as Deputy of the third party, the Home Secretary, the Chancellor, and all three Deputy Speakers.”

This visible leadership from women across every major party is not only symbolic – it’s substantial. It sends a clear message to women watching from outside Westminster: your voice matters, and your place in politics is waiting.

Celebrating Confidence and Candid Joy

In true Daisy Cooper style, the speech combined serious reflection with light-hearted commentary on the changing culture of Parliament.

“We are rocking the trouser suits, ladies! There is so much more colour, in every single way, in the House of Commons chamber – and it is delightful to see.”

But beneath the humour was a powerful truth: Parliament is evolving. And with every woman elected, the institution becomes more reflective of the society it serves – not only in gender, but in background, experience, and perspective.

Supporting Candidates: “Come and Join Us”

Cooper’s closing call to action was simple and sincere. Addressing aspiring candidates from all political parties, she shared her own sense of purpose and pride. “If you are currently a candidate, or you’re trying to get elected – for any political party, at any level of politics – go for it. It is awesome being a woman in politics”, Cooper said.

For those thinking of standing, her message was clear: the door is open, and the time is now.
