On the 1st of June the Birmingham Clean Air Zone was launched. The scheme operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and it is hoped it will significantly reduce air pollution in the City Centre.
The charges are applied daily, effective from 14 June 2021. A non-compliant vehicle driving in the Zone will pay once for the day, then may drive in the area without limit on that day. The zone is a “Class D” zone and if you’re planning to travel within the zone you should check whether your car is compliant, even if it is in other places.
The Clean Air Zone covers all the roads within the A4540 Middleway Ring Road, but not the Middleway itself. Motorists are made aware when they are about to enter the Clean Air Zone as every entry to the zone is clearly signed.
“We want to help Birmingham motorists navigate the logistics of the new Clean Air Zone, to ease the confusion or mitigate risks of motorists being surprised with a fine. This is a no brainer – it is consistent with our mission to ease the hassle and expense of car ownership.”
Sai Lakshmi, Caura CEO
The charges are £8 per day for cars, taxi and LGVs or £50 a day for coaches, buses and HGVs. Charges can be settled within 6 days either side of the day of your visit via the Government’s online payment system or by calling the National Contact Centre on 0300 029 8888 (Mon-Fri 8am to 8pm and Sat 8am-4pm).
Another way to pay is by Caura, an app which enables drivers to pay without any incremental fee, within 5 seconds.
