Advancing Dementia Care: Exploring Future Technologies for Patients

dementia

Last year, the NHS Innovation and Life Sciences Commission held three inquiry sessions on dementia. The first focused on diagnostics and future technologies for dementia patients. This session brought together leaders in the NHS third sector and the life sciences industry to discuss the current state and future vision of dementia diagnostics, treatments, and technologies.

Advancements in Dementia Diagnostics

The first half of the inquiry session focused on current and future developments in diagnostics and improving early diagnoses for dementia patients.

The panel consisted of experts in the field, including the National Speciality Lead of Dementia at NIHR, Professor John O’Brien, Chief Scientific Officer at Genomics England, Professor Matt Brown, Co-Chair of the UK Dementia Mission, Professor Nadeem Sarwar, and Global External Engagement and Scientific Collaboration Lead at Roche, Dr Sasha Bozeat.

Professor O’Brien highlighted the importance of studying biomarker performance in real-world scenarios, particularly blood-based biomarkers. Professor Brown emphasised the significance of genetics as a biomarker for early detection and prediction of Alzheimer’s disease.

Meanwhile, Professor Sarwar suggested an accelerated diagnostics funnel that includes genomics, blood-based measurements, and digital technologies. Dr Bozeat emphasised the potential of wearables and passive monitoring, along with blood-based biomarkers, to guide individuals in seeking healthcare advice.

Visions for the Future

In part two of the inquiry, panellists outlined their vision for the future of dementia treatment and care. These panellists included Hilary Evans, Chief Executive at Alzheimer’s UK, Professor Nick Cox, Director of the Dementia Research Centre, and Professor Michael Hornberger, Professor of Applied Dementia Research at Norwich Medical School.

During the session, the panellists were asked about their vision for the state of diagnostics, treatment, and care in ten years’ time.

Professor Hornberger expressed his belief that blood tests would likely be available, emphasising the importance of early identification and implementing treatments. He also highlighted the significance of raising awareness about preventing dementia and reducing the risk.

Evans stated his vision of a future where people in early- and mid-life understand the measures they can take to mitigate their chances of developing dementia. While Professor Fox emphasised the importance of making specific diagnoses, allowing for targeted dementia treatments, and understanding the underlying causes.

Professor Fox also called for a re-evaluation of end-of-life care and empowering individuals to be involved in decisions regarding their care and treatment preferences.

In December, Curia launched its 2023 Dementia Commission report. Led by former Health Minister, Lord James O’Shaughnessy, the report sets out ways the Government can tackle ‘alarming’ rates of undiagnosed dementia.
